Horses are post-gastric fermenters, meaning that enzymatic digestion is followed by fermentation. This makes them susceptible to mycotoxins as monogastric animals.
Mycotoxins are toxins produced by moulds or fungi, found most commonly in warm humid climates. They can be present in pasture, hay, feed (grains) and the environment (bedding) If mycotoxins are present in pasture, hay or feed, they bind to them strongly and are excreted through the faeces.
All moulds or fungi can produce mycotoxins. Some moulds and fungi produce one type of toxin while some can produce a number of different types. These toxins can include aflatoxin, fumonisins and zearalenone.
Mycotoxins are toxic to people and horses if ingested and can cause respiratory disease if inhaled. Liver damage is a common consequence of mycotoxin ingestion as the liver removes toxins from the blood after they have been taken into the body from the intestines. Liver damage can be detected using blood tests ie; the test GGT (Gamma glutamyl transferase). It is an enzyme that can be elevated when the liver is damaged due to mycotoxin poisoning.
Signs of slow (sub-acute or chronic) mycotoxin poisoning can include: • Reduced appetite • Colic-like symptoms • Gastro-intestinal disturbance • Liver damage • Weight loss • Poor coat condition • Skin diseases • Immune suppression • Poor performance • General poor health • Inability to regulate body temperature • Irritable or uncharacteristic behaviour • Muscle twitching or twitching of the facial features • Gestation complications - premature or prolonged
It can be very hard to detect mycotoxin contamination by sight or smell. Moulds may be present on feed or forage or bedding but without mycotoxins being present, or there may be no obvious moulds present but with very high levels of mycotoxin.
If you suspect mycotoxins may be causing your horse ill health, what can you do?
To help you fight the threat from mycotoxins 💎 GT Performer includes the yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, known for its superior binding capabilities, broader adsorption profile and increased mycotoxin sequestration efficacy. The inclusion of a toxin binder in 💎 GT Performers digestive health supplement reduces the risk of mycotoxins to your horses’ body. Adsorption is the process by which carbohydrate components of yeast and algae cell walls bind to mycotoxins, removing them from the digestive tract.
💎 GT Performercontains a powerful and unique combination of superior PREBIOTICS and patented hindgut PROBIOTICS. Prebiotics are a super food for probiotics, these natural fibre boosters feed the growth of probiotics in the intestine. Prebiotics block the attachment and development of harmful bacteria within the gut. This strengthens the horse’s natural immune response, thereby reducing risk of disease. Probiotics are beneficial super bacteria that suppress the growth of bacteria in the intestinal tract, therefore promoting a well-balanced gut environment. This helps prevent toxins and pathogens getting into the bloodstream. The synergistic combination of prebiotics and probiotics equates to significantly increased levels of probiotic cells in the intestine.
💎 GT Performer also incorporates an enriched nutrient based appetite stimulant, is enhanced with vitamins, includes a PH stabilizer as well as the powerful toxin binder and is proven to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as immune stimulating properties.
