Stress - how it can affect your horse

Updated: Jan 13, 2020

Factors -

Unfortunately, we often misinterpret, don’t see or even ignore the early signs of anxiety or stress in our horses; this can escalate behavior to something more dangerous, like bucking or biting or can escalate to colic or ulcers. You’ll often see horses being punished for behaviors like barging, biting, rearing, bolting or being anxious. Stress can upset your horses stomach and cause pain and bad behaviour. But horses can only communicate with us is through their behavior and body language and, chances are, he will have been showing subtle signs of stress long before it got to this stage. Learn to look for the subtle signs of stress - your horse will thank you for it.

There are many factors that can cause stress: injury, prolonged treatment with antibiotics, anti inflammatories or other medications, prolonged periods of restricted movement; simply getting teeth done are worming can cause stress. Changes to feed, insufficient feed, separation from paddock mates, change of environment, drought can all affect your horse. Travel is another trigger - have you noticed how often a horse develops runny manure after a float trip? These and many other factors can cause stress. When your horse is under stress it causes a disruption to the intestinal flora which in turn allows the bad bacteria to dominate your horses gut. This is a gradual process which starts off unnoticed until symptoms become visible.

Symptoms -

These may include decreased appetite, poor condition despite receiving a good daily feed, colic symptoms, crib biting, wind-sucking, weaving, hindgut ulcers, slow recovery from exercise, reduced performance, tying-up, increased susceptibility to laminitis or colic, constantly shifting weight on hind legs when standing still and/or in stall, reactive to palpitation in flank area (especially on the right side) often reactive when saddled and may kick out when girth is done up, may seem generally irritable and not wanting to be handled or groomed.
